Excavator Shipping and Import Guide

How excavators are shipped internationally — RoRo vs container, disassembly, permits, and the documents you need at the port.

Shipping an excavator internationally is a logistics exercise as much as a purchase. Understanding the shipping methods and documents prevents costly port delays.

Shipping methods

  • RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) — the simplest method for self-propelled tracked or wheeled excavators. The machine is driven on and off the vessel. Best for machines that fit within RoRo deck height and weight limits.
  • Flat-rack container — for disassembled excavators or machines that exceed RoRo limits. The boom, counterweight, or tracks may be removed to fit within the container envelope. Reassembly at destination is required.
  • Open-top or flat-rack for oversized loads — for large excavators that cannot fit a container even when disassembled.

Permits and transport to the port

An oversize load moving from the factory to the origin port, or from the destination port to your site, requires a heavy-haul lowboy and oversize permits. Route surveys may be needed for large machines. Plan this leg before the machine ships.

Documents

Typical documents for an excavator import:

  • Commercial invoice
  • Packing list
  • Bill of lading (or sea waybill)
  • Certificate of origin
  • Used-machinery declaration (if applicable)
  • Engine emissions compliance (some countries require this)
  • Import license (some countries)

Customs and duties

Import duties vary by HS code and destination. Many countries apply reduced duty on construction or mining capital equipment. Research the rate before you commit. VAT or GST usually applies on top of the duty-paid value.
